Hat 101

Can I adjust my Wander Hat Co. hat?

Our hats do not have drawstrings. We provide hat filler that can be placed between the inner band and the hat for a more customized fit. The hat filler will be included with each hat.

How do I clean my wool felt hat?

Spot clean your hat with a damp cloth using warm water. Make sure the cloth doesn’t have any dye that can transfer over onto your hat.

Use a lint roller or a soft-bristled brush in circular motions to remove hair and dust.

If your hat gets wet and begins to lose its shape or there is a more prevalent stain, we recommend taking it to a professional hat repair shop.

Do not put your hat in a dryer or use high heat as this can cause damage to the wool material.

How do I store my hat?

There are three ways to store your wide brim wool felt hat: on a shelf, in a hat box, or hanging on a wall.

Shelf: When storing your hat on a shelf, we recommend flipping the hat upside down on its crown rather than laying it flat on its brim. This avoids putting too much pressure on the brim, which could lead it to change shape over time. Be sure that the shelf is clean.

Hat Box: These special boxes are designed to suspend the crown allowing even support of the hat brim. The boxes our hats are shipped in are perfect for storing your hats properly.

Hanging: If you love your hats as much as we do, we understand wanting them to be on display. If you choose to hang your hat, put a cotton or foam ball on the tip of the nail so it doesn’t damage the hat. Be sure there is no direct sunlight wherever you decide to hang your hats. Prolonged sun exposure can lead to discoloration.

A cool, dry place out of direct sunlight is the best place for your hat.

Sizing:

You’ve found the perfect hat style, now you need the perfect fit. Finding your hat size takes just a few steps.

How do I find my hat size?

Hats are typically measured in centimeters using the inside circumference of the hat’s crown where the sweatband resides. In order to find your preferred hat size, you will need a cloth tape measure or a piece of string or yarn and a standard ruler or tape measure.

Our hat sizes include Small (55cm), Medium (57cm) and Large (59cm). If you are in-between sizes, we always recommend you size up as our hats are very stiff and do not have a lot of give. We provide each order with hat filler that will reduce the size of your hat by 1cm to 2.5cm.

When taking your measurements, keep in mind there is no perfect fit. It all comes down to personal preference. Think about when and where you wear your hat most and if you prefer a tighter or looser fit hat.

Ways to measure your head:

There are two ways to wear your Wander Hat Co. wide brim hat: the traditional style and the halo style. Each way requires a different measurement. We recommend measuring both ways then choosing the larger measurement when determining your size to give you the option to switch between styles.

The Traditional Style

The traditional style of wearing a wide brim hat is to have the front tip low on the forehead just above your eyebrows. This allows the hat to sit nearly level with the ground.

To measure for this style, take your measuring tape or string and start  ½ inch to 1 inch above your eyebrows depending on how low you like to wear your hats. Keep the tape as level to the ground as possible as you wrap it around the back of your head to the starting point.

Record your measurement to the nearest centimeter. Size up if you are in-between sizes.

If you are using a piece of string to measure, lie the string on a flat surface after you’ve wrapped it around your head and measure it with a ruler or standard measuring tape.

The Halo Style

The halo style creates a halo-like illusion on your head. The front of your hat is raised slightly allowing the hat to sit on the back of your head.

To measure for this style, take your tape measure or string and start just above your hairline. Wrap it around the back of your head having it pass just above your neck to the front of your head at the starting point. The string at the front of your head will be higher than the back.

Record your measurement to the nearest centimeter. Size up if you are in-between sizes.

This measurement will be smaller than the traditional style. We recommend using the larger of the two measurements.

If you are using a piece of string to measure, lie the string on a flat surface after you’ve wrapped it around your head and measure it with a ruler or standard measuring tape.
